Citing Sources
Citing sources is important in academic research.
- Information describing books, periodical articles, websites, and other resources is called a citation (Modern Language Association or MLA) or reference (American Psychological Association or APA). The format of the citations (or references) depends upon the style used.
- The source list. The most common form of citing sources at PBCC (that's not to say there are no other forms) is the source list (in MLA its called Works Cited; in APA its called References) / in-text citation (or parenthetical citation) format. The Works Cited (or References in APA) list consists of all works cited in a research paper and typically is positioned at the end of the paper.
- Works Cited (MLA) lists. Sample papers are provided by Daly and Levi in the Diana Hacker textbook (2006), Bedford Handbook. Go to the end of the sample papers to see Works Cited lists.
- Reference (APA) lists. Sample paper is provided by Murano in the Diana Hacker textbook (2006), Bedford Handbook. Go to the end of the sample paper to see References.
- In-text citations. Within the text of a research paper, we quote or paraphrase (information from another author, but written in our own words).
- The form of the citation in the text varies according to style used for citing sources (MLA or APA).
- 'Giving credit to creators of images and other graphical material. See The Bedford Handbook (Diana Hacker, 2006, pp. 119-120; see also p. 656 for MLA and 740 for APA), for more information.
- Reasons for citing sources
- Avoid plagiarism
- We borrow information from those who create the works (i.e., books, articles, web pages, etc.). Authors, painters, photographers, computer graphics designers, and others allow, for educational purposes, the "borrowing" of portions of their works with the stipulation that such material is appropriately cited. If material is not appropriately cited, it's called plagiarism.
- Plagiriasm is illegal. See PBCC Plagiarism resources.
- Credibility
- Each writer must create credibility in order to be taken seriously with regard to his/her works. When citing sources, writers quote or paraphrase experts in the field, thereby enhancing their own credibility.
- Information
- When citing sources, the writer informs readers - teachers, professors, or anyone else - about the material used in the research paper.
- Avoid plagiarism
